The La Cantera vineyard from which Solomazuelo comes was planted by my grandfather Justo Casado a little over 30 years ago on a 1-hectare plot, optimal for this variety: sandy clay soil, with a lot of boulders, ideal for controlling vigor and fertility of the variety. It is on a plateau protected by kermes oaks around its entire perimeter except the north face, which allows the entry of the prevailing winds in the area, especially the north wind, a great ally, together with moderate vigor, to combat powdery mildew, the main cryptogamic disease to which the cariñena is very sensitive.
Mazuelo is a variety that has historically been part of the great Rioja wines, being largely responsible for its longevity. In La Cantera it is planted in a goblet, at more than 550 meters above sea level, in clayey soil with abundant rounded pebbles and low fertility. The viticulture used seeks to obtain quality grapes; low yields around 4,000 Kg/Ha, basal defoliation on the northeast face, optimal phenolic ripening of skin and seeds, without probable excessive degrees. The elaboration seeks to be as respectful as possible with the characteristics of the wine, minimizing exogenous contributions.
